Throughout 2020, we have recalculated just about everything…including the delivery of our Semi-annual Symposium which normally happens in-person. This year, we will gather virtually!
Crisis management, scenario planning and the economic and health shocks affecting employees have been the hallmarks of leaders in the COVID crisis so far. We are all recalibrating and continuously evaluating as we work toward recovery and the new normal. Our agenda for the Semi-annual will explore recovery, the political climate and global trade insights amid the pandemic.
The day will be broken into three sessions to allow ample time for business between periods.
SESSION 1: OPENING REMARKS AND THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORTATION
- OG100 board chair and CEO of EllisDon, Geoff Smith, and;
- Minister Victor Fedeli, Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade
Following these opening remarks on the state of affairs within Ontario, we will discuss the future of transportation with a blue-ribbon auto panel, including:
- Flavio Volpe, President & CEO, Auto-Parts Manufacturers’ Association (moderator)
- Frank Voss, President, Toronto Motor Manufacturing Canada
- Rob Wildeboer, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder, Martinrea International Inc.
- Asad Husain, Partner, McKinsey & Company
Our panelists will share their perspectives on where they believe the transportation and North American auto sector is going over the next 5 to 10 years and what they are doing to prepare for that reality.
SESSION 2: CANADA’S COMPARATIVE ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE IN 2021 AND BEYOND
We will break for business and lunch, and regroup at 1pm for a discussion on Canada’s comparative economic advantage in 2021 and beyond, featuring:
- Michael Wernick, Former Clerk of the Privy Council, and
- Heather Scoffield, Ottawa Bureau Chief and Economics Columnist at the Toronto Star
This will be a timely discussion with a large scope…we might be in the midst of turbulent times in the U.S. in mid-November.
SESSION 3: GLOBAL TRADE INSIGHTS: THE FEDEX TRADE INDEX
After another business break, we will gather at 3pm for a special discussion with Lisa Lisson, President of FedEx Express Canada, on Global Trade Insights: The FedEx Trade Index.
The FedEx Trade Index survey results will be available in November, and our membership will receive the first presentation of the results in Canada. This year’s index focuses on mid-sized businesses.

In the weeks to come, we will profile each session in detail and provide primers on each topic. Stay tuned!
